Joel Behrens is a Visual Effects Supervisor at Digital Domain, where he brings over two decades of experience, with a portfolio spanning more than 40 feature films, as well as numerous high-profile episodic and commercial projects. He is currently leading work on an upcoming, unannounced project that is already generating significant anticipation.
Joel served as the Visual Effects Supervisor for Netflix’s sci-fi adventure The Electric State, directed by the Russo Brothers. In this pivotal role, he led Digital Domain’s efforts as the primary VFX vendor, overseeing more than 850 shots, the creation of over 60 digital characters, and the development of nearly 480 assets—cementing his reputation for managing complex, large-scale productions with precision and vision.
Before that, Joel was the VFX Supervisor on Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and played a central role in shaping the supernatural visuals of Sony’s Morbius, collaborating closely with director Daniel Espinosa to design the film’s distinctive vampire effects and elevate the storytelling through cutting-edge visuals.
Earlier in his career, Joel served as the Digital Effects Supervisor on Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, which was nominated for both Academy and BAFTA Awards. There, he managed the film’s extensive technology pipeline and coordinated the creative efforts of hundreds of artists at Digital Domain. His diverse credits also include major titles like Ant-Man and the Wasp, Pixels, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Ender’s Game, and Her.
Beyond film, Joel has made a mark in the commercial world, notably directing digital effects for Spike Jonze’s celebrated “My Mutant Brain” spot for Kenzo World, which won numerous awards, including the Titanium Lion and the Epica Film Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
Joel is a proud member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and continues to be a driving force behind Digital Domain’s award-winning visual effects team.
