After being the third runner-up in the Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant, she was scouted by producer director Johnnie To and cast in his film The Enigmatic Case (1980). Her beauty and charm quickly led to her becoming one of the top actresses in Hong Kong at the time and earned her the nickname "the Marilyn Monroe of Hong Kong".
